The Rising Popularity of Teak: Part 2

In a previous blog about the Rising Popularity of Teak, I spoke of how Phaunos Timber Fund Ltd. purchased 2,100 hectare to create a new teak and eucalyptus plantation. Recently, another private timber company has proposed to invest nearly $15 million in teak plantations directly on the Island of Fiji within the next 15 years.

This new development provides more proof that teak lumber is quickly becoming a popular wood due to its natural tendency to repel moisture and insects. The Fiji Times explains that Future Forests Fiji Limited (FFF) is the first company to plant teak on a commercial basis. This company is comprised of a group of investors from Fiji, Australia, and Europe.

This is great news for curious teak owners as the price of teak may come down, and the locations of legally harvested teak will increase. Finding high-quality teak lumber to legally produce luxury teak furniture may become easier to obtain.

This new venture in teak can become a “major contributor to the [Fiji] economy in the next 10 years”, according to Radio Australia.

At London Teak, you can be assured that all of our teak products available come from sustainable, government-regulated teak plantations from Indonesia.

Teak Floor Tiles

Now that you have your exquisite outdoor teak furniture setup in your outdoor living area, perhaps adding teak floor tiles beneath your teak furniture set to create a matching arrangement. London Teak’s floor tiles are the perfect complement your current teak furniture and extremely easy to setup.

Each teak floor tile box contains 4 teak floor tiles, each is about 20 inches square. That is a total of nearly 21 square feet of teak tiles to be used in your outdoor living area. Each box features several plastic connectors to join each teak floor tile together easily. They also are not connected permanently, this way if you intend to move or rearrange your outdoor living area, you can do so without struggle.

For many, teak floor tiles can be used right on top of concrete pool area. This way you can transform your bland pool and patio area to luxurious outdoor getaway. When placed together these teak floor tiles create a repeating diamond pattern that is mesmerizing as it is gorgeous.

Never worry about your teak floor tiles cracking, whithering or splitting through years of use. Teak naturally repels moisture due to its dense wood fibers. If left near or directly near sunlight, you will gradually notice that the golden brown color of your teak floor tiles will turn a silver-grey color. This patina is a famous quality of teak furniture as the top layers of teak dry and lock-in the rest of the moisture found in teak wood.

These teak floor tiles have also been kiln-dried to extract additional, unnecessary moisture from the wood long before any wood crafting begins. This is another preventative measure to reduce moisture down to the lowest levels possible to increase the teak wood density, making it stronger.

Teak floor tiles are perfect for any outdoor teak dining set, sofa set, or any other outdoor arrangement. Learn more about teak floor tiles at London Teak and create a whole new aspect for your outdoor living area

Installing Teak Wood Decks on Cruise Ships

It is a well known fact that teak wood is a popular choice to use on nautical equipment, especially yachts and cruise ships. I have found a rather interesting blog that briefly explains the process a ship building goes through to install a teak wood deck on a cruise ship. It is an interesting process that is highly rewarding to the longevity of the cruise ship and the guests who plan to enjoy their vacations.

Before the teak wood arrives to the cruise ship, they clean the teak wood in a unique way, by having thousands of small steel balls vibrate on the teak wood.

Then they weld 1 inch-wide steel strips to the deck, these will be used to form the gutters. Prior to the process, all the teak wood has been fastened to stainless-steel spacer strips. This allows the installers to slide the teak wood into slots very easily, making installation quick.

Several compounds such as Sikaflor and Sikaflex are used for leveling and to glue all the teak wood planks together. The Sikaflex specifically is also used to caulk the seams between each of the teak wood planks. This Sikaflex compound is also used in several teak wood products on London Teak, such as our Sleek Stainless Steel and Teak High Bar Console.

Finally, pallets of sand-filled bags are placed on top of the teak wood planks to help the glues set and prevent bubbles from getting beneath the planks.
